The Sun and the Moon join for our New Moon in sidereal Taurus in the star of Rohini May 30th, at 1:30 pm HT (4:30 pm PDT). Rohini is the rosy red maiden who is ripe with fertility, creativity and growth. In the mythology, she is the favorite of the 27 wives of the Moon. He chooses to stay with her every night until her jealous sister Jyestha, “the eldest” complains to their father, the creator, that Soma (the Moon) is not spreading his time evenly amongst the Nakshatras as his creation intended. Daksha approaches Soma and insists that he spend one night with each of his daughters and Soma agrees. But his passion and desire is so strong that he is not able to pull himself from Rohini. When Daksha finds out, he curses the Moon to wane to nothing. His daughters are so upset when they see their husband losing his luminescence, that they beg he amend the curse. Daksha did, if Soma agreed to do his duty and travel the sky visiting all his daughters, he would be allowed to grow to Full half the month and diminish to New the other half. In another story, even Rohini’s own father wants to mate with her, in order to create the most beautiful beings. Both of these stories show the fallout from being too attractive, creative and desirable. This section of the sky enhances our beauty, sensuality and capacity to create, and also can increase jealousy, promiscuity, abuse, manipulation and sexual fixation. There’s an innocence here, where we are not fully aware of our sexual and creative power, much like a young girl who has not yet learned to harness this energy.
In the sign of Taurus, this New Moon is bringing us to a cycle of grounded action in the direction of our values. Taurus is the feminine earth sign that is ruled by Venus. As such, it is where we are practical yet desire what is useful to also be beautiful and sensual. Here we are attached to possessions, feeling good, and food, and need fertile soil in which to grow the things that make us happy. The Moon is exalted in Taurus because we are able to temper the volatile ups and downs of our mind and emotions when we take simple, clear and grounded steps towards feeling better. By establishing basic channels to meet our physical needs, especially in a slow and pleasant way, rather than at an emergency pitch, we naturally regulate the nervous system and create a more nourishing environment for our thoughts to settle and our emotions to find middle ground. The Sun is in a more challenging position as our capacity to connect to Consciousness is through this luminary and the heavy, earth bound energy of Taurus can make this more challenging. By being so particularly bound to the material, it becomes difficult to pierce through it in order to find our clear channel to Source. Our leadership might be lazy, or directed by desire, gluttony or greed if we are not careful. While New Moon’s are a time for meditation as our mind is in its most blank or dark state, this one might be perfect for a more tantric meditation, where we merge with what we are doing. Whether making music, surfing, crafting, practicing hatha yoga or making love, we are able to find the still point in the engagement and through this attachment to what we love and life itself. Mercury is still Retrograde for a few more days and is joined our Moon and Sun here in Taurus. Because it is still Retrograde at the moment of the New Moon, the cycle to come will have the energy of delayed communication and having to return to previous conversations, writings, notes etc in order to “get” what is being communicated. Once direct, we will have more clarity and ease in this endeavor, but the quality will still be present throughout this month to come. Venus, the ruler of this New Moon is now in Aries, having moved through exaltation at the end of Pisces and then the Gandanta (karmic knot) point between Pisces and Aries. We might feel newly energized in our relationships or in the direction that makes us happy. We also might find ourselves going off in our own direction, unaware that whoever was with us is not anymore. This is a wonderful time to initiate healthy routine practices both actively (Aries is ruled by Mars, the planet of Action and Discipline) and pro-actively with healing medicines and techniques from Ayurveda (Venus is in Ashwini, the nakshatra of physicians to the Gods). Sometimes, the best way to show up for others is to show up for ourselves first. The North Node, Rahu, is also here and as Venus inches closer to it, expect to have some confusion and delusion around your relationships and even desires. All the more reason to create or continue strong self-care practices…as this is how you maintain equanimity in the ever-changing seasons of our psyche. Mars is now joined Jupiter in Pisces and in very close degrees. This can also give our sadhana (daily practices) a strong kick forward from the planet of our Beliefs and Ideals. While Mars in Pisces can be a bit aimless, having the ruler Jupiter there can help remind you of the aim of your practices and how they are benefiting you spiritually, beyond just physical strengthening. This can also be a time where we become a bit “black and white” in how we approach what we believe, as Mars can distill everything down to two choices where one is always “right”. While this works wonderfully for things like creating decisive and disciplined practices in your life, it can be detrimental to the naturally expansive and inspirational quality of Jupiter. Saturn is now slowed to station, rearing to Retrograde on June 4th! Saturn is the planet of Time, Consequence, Humility and Commitment. He indicates our process of aging, which begins as soon as we are born. He remind us that the only thing we know for sure is that we will one day die. Since we don’t know when that will be, we better buckle down and do what needs to be done now. He can be a pleasure-sucker by creating an atmosphere of pressure and pain, but it is through this gate we must walk if we ever hope to be free of the wheel of time. When Retrograde, we tend to question our commitments, feel pressure and fear internally, yet have a harder time rolling up the sleeves and getting to work on whatever it is we are feeling that about. (HINT: follow the directions at the bottom if you want to know what area of your life this is). Saturn will be Retrograde until October 22, 2022. His lessons take a long time to learn and require an (also long) “rolling back” over old ground before we can move forward with what work needs to be done.
