New Moon in Capricorn
The Moon will be joining the Sun in exact degrees on the morning of February 8th at 4:39 am Hawaiian Standard Time, in the sign of Capricorn, Makara in Sanskrit, the Crocodile. The crocodile moves through both water, or our emotions, and on land, our practical, tangible reality. Capricorn is where we are taking our emotional needs and filling them through the material plane, sometimes at the expense of others' feelings and needs as this can be both the most materialistic sign of the zodiac as well as the one where we use one another to get our own real or perceived needs met. (side note: It is easy to dislike a sign for these qualities, but each sign plays an important role in our lives and we all have every sign in the zodiac in one house or another of our chart. If we don't have a planet in that house, but it rules an important area of our life, it will affect us greatly still). The New Moon is happening in the nakshatra Dhanistha, at the end of Capricorn, beginning of Aquarius. This nakshatra is located in the star cluster, Delphinus, the Dolphin and is represented by the Mridanga drum, used to count out time by Lord Shiva and its disciplined, pro-active nature is shown by its rulership by Mars. Dhanistha is a star that brings us fortune, both on a material and a spiritual plane. The deities of this star are the 8 Vasus, Agni (Fire), Prithvi (Earth), Vayu (Wind), Antariksha (Space), Aditya (Sun), Dyaus (Sky), Chandramas (Moon) and the Nakstrani (Stars). In one version of their myth, the Vasus steal the wish-fulfilling cow at the prompting of Dyaus. The sage Vasistha is angry so he curses them to be born as mortals on Earth. Amending his curse, he allows that 7 of the Vasus will be allowed to return to the celestial realm soon after they are born to their mother Ganga, who purifies them by drowning them in her holy waters, ending their earthly existence. Only Dyaus must remain to fulfill the curse and he eventually became Bhishma, a hero in the Mahabharata. Capricorn is ruled by the planet Saturn, who is giving dristhi (an energetic glare) to both the Sun and the Moon on this New Moon within a 5 degree orb. It has been giving it's drishti to the Sun for several weeks now, increasing our Vata, dryness and scattered energy and now the drishti is separating, and we will feel this decrease even more over the next week and as the Sun moves into Aquarius the night of February 12th. We have been feeling the fear and pressure from this aspect in terms of our Soul power and leadership, but as the Moon joins in we will feel it in our emotional and psychological realm as well. We just had a rough run with the Moon, joining Mars this past Monday and then moving through debilitation in Scorpio into a conjunction with Saturn. Even though these next couple days (from Thursday to Saturday morning) we are enjoying the Moon joined Mercury and Venus in Sagittarius, creating a little more ease and grace, especially in our relations with others, the fact that these three benefics are being hemmed between the high-stress and general depression of Saturn and the burning, purifying blaze of the Sun is making for a transformation of fear into fire and it might not always feel so good. Venus and Mercury have been hemmed for a couple weeks now, so, much like the Saturn/Sun aspect, this is an energy that we have been experiencing anyway, but once the Moon passes through, we will feel it more on an emotional and psychological level. Our Soul Power, the Sun, has also been receiving a dristhi from Mars these past few weeks, putting a little fire in our burners, despite the overwhelming fear. When the Sun moves into Aquarius on the 12th, we will begin to see our vision open up to include the larger picture. The changing of the lunar nodes this month (see past reports) has brought us into focus with our sense of power and authority, but with the ruling planet of Leo in Capricorn with dristhi from its ruler, Saturn, it has been all work, and largely the selfish sort, with a lot of fear and energy directing the energy. When the Sun shifts signs, both of these aspects will dissipate and as we start to lose the pressure, we will be able to expand our sight to see our longer-term intentions. This will be important because on February 21st, Mars is joining Saturn in Scorpio and we will be forced to release our fear in order to do whatever we've been sitting on in the house Scorpio rules for you. I will talk about this conjunction more in the Full Moon report in two weeks. Meanwhile, Jupiter is still retrograde in Leo, joined Rahu, the north node of the Moon, in a two degree conjunction. This is putting a lot of focus on receiving teachings and also really evaluating what our beliefs and ideals really are in relation to our teachers and teachings. With Rahu, we can expect a little hyperactivity and confusion in this area, without a lot of comforting assurance. In general this New Moon is not going to feel very sweet, but our own attachments and perspectives can go a long way. This is a wonderful time to get things done and do some financial accounting and planning, and maintaing a self-nurturing attitude can help mitigate some of the stress. As always, the New Moon is a time to go inside yourself and reflect and meditate. These practices can greatly help alleviate anxiety. Also drinking a lot of water as Saturn aspect on the Sun and then Moon is drying and doing yin yoga or other calming exercises. We want to keep our energy focused on creating abundance in our lives now, not run ourselves out with too much physical exertion and or unnecessary stress. If we honor our boundaries and those of others, and learn to manage our time along with our money, this new cycle can be a very beautiful birthing of life to all the creations, projects and energy we have been planting in our hearts and minds.
