The Moon and the Sun will be in exact degrees across from each other on Sunday, December 3rd, at 5:48 am Hawaii Time. This means the Purnima tithi or Full Phase of the Moon begins on Saturday, making Saturday night's moon the brightest of this cycle. It is also a Super Moon, making it one of the brightest and biggest of the year. This Full Moon is in sidereal Taurus, the sign where the Moon herself is exalted, in the best operating intelligence our Psyche can be in. In Taurus, our emotions feel stabilized and the external peace we are compelled to create offers our mind the comfort it needs to settle and just be. Taurus is an earth sign ruled by the planet Venus. It brings us to a place where we are grounded in the physical world and in our bodies. This being one of the main avenues in which we have to actually Do anything, it is in harnessing the physical world for beauty, pleasure and peace that offers us the same state of being in our Psyche. It can be calming to connect with the earth, our artistic or sensual nature, enjoy good food and relax into our home. All of these are activities we feel compelled towards when the Moon passes through Taurus. This being the Full Moon, the counter point to what cycle we are basically in for this “month” or Moon cycle it is the opposite of what we encountered at the New Moon in Scorpio two weeks ago. In Scorpio, the Moon is debilitated, or operating at its least intelligence. There we feel turbulent, emotional and out of control. As Scorpio is ruled by Mars, our Psyche often feels as though it is in battle over our very life. The great fears that come up when we dig in deep to our own nature and emotions and the lack of control we have in the world or over others is destabilizing and vexing to our emotional nature. Our mind can tunnel into different thought trains that it is difficult to pull out of and if we are not careful, we can lash out at others, whom we imagine are to blame. If we are strong and vigilant, we will find in ourselves everything we are fighting and finally surrender into deep peace that comes from facing the worst possible fears and enemies and integrating them rather than exiling them. The Full Moon is being aspected by the Sun and Venus in Scorpio and Mars in Libra. This will bring about a greater desire for happiness, pleasure and connectivity from Venus, but with a burning luminary shining brightly on the truth, not allowing us to take frivolous pleasure in that which is illusory. Mars will bring a certain sense of our warrior nature. Since it is in Venus's masculine sign that connects us with fairness and equality in relationships with others and it is joined Jupiter, who is highlighting justice and higher ideals surrounding this theme, we can expect to see more anger and action against those who misuse their power (the Sun) for only their own happiness and pleasure (Venus). If we are smart, we will also see the ways in which we do this ourselves. This Full Moon is happening in the nakshatra or specific star of Rohini. Rohini is the “rosy one” the young, sensual woman ready to be plucked. She is the most beautiful of all the 27 nakshatras and is often the target of jealousy as such. As the beautiful young woman, she also experiences favoritism from both her husband and her father. She, perhaps, enjoys being her husband's favorite wife, although her sister's do not appreciate it and it alienates her from them. She does not, however, enjoy the advances from her father, the creator, and she turns herself into a deer and runs away from him to earth. He has a noble cause, he says, to create perfect beings with his perfect daughter, but she is not interested in his cause and it does not mitigate the discomfort she is made to feel in his prowl. This story is quite apropro for these times indeed! Of course, the Vedic story has a patriarchal undertone that what her father was doing WAS correct, and that it was best for everyone. There is also the token “heroes” also male, who try to seek retribution for the creator's misdeeds by pooling all their anger to create a super angry fellow named Rudra who shoots down the creator and sends him falling to the earth. Thus, the plans for perfect beings are foiled and we all have issues instead. Lightening, Thunder, Hurricanes, and Tornadoes are all created along with Rudra. From this destruction, the earth mother Aditi is born and she is our love in spite of all the pain. With Rahu, the north node of the Moon in Cancer, we have been seeing more and more themes surrounding the Feminine and the Mother arise. We are at the beginning of this year and a half period of heightened energy in the emotional realm, where we may find ourselves obsessing over feelings and connections but also devoting ourselves to the divine that is in all things and recognizing the importance of acknowledging our feelings and needs. Cancer is the sign of unconditional love and for many of us, this is a love we have never felt in this world. It is ideally the way your parents made you feel, but all too often the love we receive from our parents is actually conditional. The only true way to experience unconditional love is with the Divine. Cancer is where we offer up our love to our Universal Mother, as her children. With Jupiter in Libra for the first year of this alignment, we will be navigating what the balance of conditional vs. unconditional love is and where each one is appropriate. With Saturn early on in his 2 ½ years in Sagittarius, we are committing to what we believe in a potentially constrictive and fearful manner. We are willing to do the work in service of our beliefs and ideals, but we may be less expansive and hopeful with what we believe to begin with. We will likely try to “level the playing field” in a practical, intellectual approach on a global scale, using philosophies and laws to “make things fair” for women. This is important, but it will only be a bandaid on a huge open wound if the deeper psychology of our world society does not make a shift as well. If we do not shift the collective consciousness out of the patriarchal paradigm, we will continue to perpetuate it, even as we make efforts to fight or control it. This is the period to honor the Mother, as in the giver and nurturer of life. As in our planet. As in our homes. As in our hearts. On a higher level, what we are really being called to do is surrender our Mind and “think” with our hearts. Bhakti means 'devotion' or 'love'. We are being called to Love all of life as part of the Goddess herself. Even ourselves. Even our shadows. Unconditionally.
