On Christmas Day, from 6:29 pm to 12:05 am on the 26th (PST), there will be a solar eclipse in the sign of Sagittarius, with the height of the eclipse being at 9:17 pm. In California, and the United States, it will not be visible, as it is night, but it will be seen from Saudi Arabia, India, the Philippines and some Pacific Islands. This eclipse is powerful in many ways. It is the Sun being eclipsed by the south Node of the Moon, Ketu. This marks an ending of some karmas, in an area of our life that has been getting worked for almost a year, with both Ketu and Saturn holding court here. Ketu has had us withdrawing or avoiding this area of our life and Saturn has had us committing to it out of fear. Sagittarius is the sign of our beliefs, our ideals and what inspires us. It is the place where we find faith and lose it, depending on our relationship with its ruler, Jupiter.
As of November, Jupiter moved into his own sign and joined Saturn and Ketu, and for this Solar Eclipse (meaning on the New Moon), we will see the Moon, Sun and Mercury joining for a veritable party. Couple this with being on Christmas Day (and during Hanukkah), when most people in the West will be gathering with their families and we can imagine the potential upsets that can occur. What Jupiter is showing us is how to be pure in our wisdom. How to find and use honest teachings and teachers to grow into better people. We must subscribe to ideologies that can hold water throughout time and that leave space for other people to differ from us. If they do not, then they are undoubtedly not pure teachings, and have been convoluted, manipulated or created by those who seek control and power. We must rise to the level of being strong in our beliefs, yet open to hearing that other's are coming from a different perspective. We must be able to find the uniting force behind these different systems and we must learn when to speak, when to listen and when to simply do neither and just let it be. Let this be that time. With Mercury here, we may be inclined to stand on our pulpit. Don't. Use that intellect to take some time off and listen to an uplifting podcast or read something or shut off the TV and play a game. The only two planets, not in Sagittarius on Christmas Day will be Mars, just having entered his own sign of Scorpio, and offering us the courage and discipline we need to do the inner work. We may still feel the fire on the interpersonal emotional battles, but have a chance of reigning it in to a path of action. Venus, the planet of relationships is in Capricorn, giving us a one-pointed focus in our relationships. We may be a bit selfish at the moment, but also with our eye on the long-term goal. Now might not be the time of flowers and soft words, but it is a time for action and effort that can bring us much more than romance down the road. This also indicates, that unless you have your relationship planet (meaning the ruler of your 7th house) in Sagittarius, you are likely to have less uprooting in love right now than everywhere else, as Venus is keeping our Love and Happiness out of the whirlwind. Of course, its only Venus and Mars-ruled people that do not have their 7th lord there, and they also enjoy their ruling planet (ie; themselves) being free of this tornado. This eclipse is taking place in the nakshatra Mula, one of the most challenging of the 27 Vedic stars. Here is where we literally uproot our belief systems, and possibly lives, in order to replant something that resonates better with the new frequency we are finding. The trouble is that uprooting is painful, and the large gaping holes left in its wake take time to fill in. We may be tempted to quickly fill them. We may also be feeling a bit wild and so untamed and free that we want to destroy other people's beliefs systems as well. Be careful. This is a storm for each of us to experience for ourselves. It is not your work to upheave someone else. Mula is ruled by Nirriti, the goddess of chaos and destruction. Often associated with Kali, she is a dark goddess that helps us clear karma in what can feel like a traumatic way. She is less nurturing than Kali can be, however and is where we can spin so far from order that we wind up in utter disorder. With our Sun, our source of Power and Light being eclipsed, especially so close to the Solstice where, in the Northern Hemisphere, we are on the path of growing in our light towards summer, we can see that there is a deep lesson for us to finally learn about that power, and our authority in this world. For many of us, I suspect it will be to stand in it more. For the powers that currently hold much of our world in its grasp, I suspect it will be a wake up call of what the collective strength of everyone else can yield. This last year was very much one that found us and leaders/governments being oppressive and fear-driven. With Jupiter now here to show us our light and Saturn moving on to his own sign of Capricorn in January, we are ready to release our fear to genuine hard work and humility. We are ready to accept better wisdom and teachings and to rise up to meet our inner light. It might be messy, painful even, to get there, but we are ready. The Moon will be Full in the sign of sidereal Taurus in the star of Mrigasira on Wednesday, December 11th at 9:12 pm PST. Taurus is where we are grounding down into the material, physical world. The Moon is exalted in the earthy terrain of Taurus. We eat, we sleep, we take care of our sensory needs and wants and we aim to be harmonious, not just with others, but with the world around us. In contrast to our debilitated New Moon two weeks ago in Scorpio, where we rode the roller coaster of the emotional underbelly and faced our fears, Taurus is where we face our life and live it here and now. The specific star of this Full Moon, Mrigasira, is where we become unsatisfied with what we've always known and the comfort of our family values and run off into the world to find new ways of doing things. It is called “the Searching Star” and is often a search for spiritual truth. There is a warrior aspect to this star, where we must have the courage to leave and the faith to know the path will find us on our journey into the unknown. (Watch the video for the myth related to this star!)
Mercury is in Scorpio with our Sun, creating communication that has his strength and power backing it. The Sun in Scorpio brings the shadows into the light. It forces that which was hiding to come out like a flashlight and it shows us that in the end it's not as scary as we thought. Mercury in Scorpio is less aligned, however, wanting to control connection and communication and getting trapped in thoughts that are fearful and dark. With the Sun at the helm, we could have some powerful conversations that really speak to our hidden depths, but we also must beware of wielding power with our words that is aimed at manipulating others' feelings. Mars is still in Libra, putting a harshness in our sweet idyllic world of peace and harmony and beauty. The occasional sound of stomping feet or pounding fists can only be ignored for so long! We also have to be aware that we might blame others for our lack of discipline right now. We make choices to lean towards luxury or connection and then feel guilty for not being more physically active and disciplined or logical, so we feel angry at the “other”. Likewise, with Venus still struggling her way through Sagittarius, we have to be aware that our relations are on thin ice right now. Best to find the people you have similar ideals and beliefs as and talk to them, unless you are ready to have a battle. With Jupiter in his own sign we are able to see the higher picture, and perhaps the similarities in different belief systems, but can also get caught way up in the dogma and social beliefs and constructs if we are not very evolved in this area of life. Venus is now in exact degrees with Saturn, putting a real strangle on our fun and happiness and creating fear around relationships and connection. This can create commitment, but it is fearfully-derived and the pressure that is on our planet of love right now does not make us feel super romantic. Coming on the heels of a Venus/Ketu conjunction, you may even be running back to, or questioning a love interest you just cut off.
