Our New Moon this month is in sidereal Libra, on October 25th at 5:48 am Hawaii Time (8:48 am PDT), which also brings us into a partial Solar Eclipse. The Moon and Sun are joining together with the ruler of Libra, Venus, in very close degrees making this an eclipse of our Mind, Soul and Love all at the same time. These three Grahas (planets/luminaries) are being “eaten” by the Chaya Graha (Shadow Planet) Ketu, the South Node, and the keeper of our past karmas. This means this is a wonderful time to go deep, and trudge up what we are holding from our parents (as the Moon is also the Mother and the Sun, the father) as well as past partners and lovers (Venus). Ketu holds our past wounds as well as our blessings; all the wisdom we carry, but he is the headless serpent, the one with only an inward gaze that can mutate what we see in disgust. He can also help us finally burn free from the illusions of the past, if we are willing to look at what irks us. After 6 months of traversing the terrain in front of us with our eyes fixated on what we personally desire and no outward gaze to see how that may affect others, the effects of this either negligence or deep inner work is finally coming home. For some, it will be an opportunity to clear the relational baggage that has kept you from intimacy and true connection, for others, it will be the thing that will force you to look wherein you have been refusing. For all of us, it will greatly help to know what house Libra is in your Vedic chart, as this indicates the area of life this transformation is happening through. Swati is the nakshatra that falls in the middle of Libra and shows our soul’s path of individuation. It is ruled by Vayyu, the wind, and Rahu, the north Node who magnifies our delusions and sprays them out into the world. Libra is the sign of Others and indicates the vacillations of the mind that make it difficult to make decisions or commit to things as we allow our friends and lovers to sway us this way and that. Swati means sword and it is by wielding this sword that we cut through the illusions of assumptions that mire our relationships with others. We may think people are against us, or pushing us to do things, or are even thinking of us at all in the choices they make, but often this is not true. Even if it is somewhat true, we are rarely the center of anyone else’s choices. If we are centering others in our own actions and decisions then we really need to evaluate this. When we do something “for someone else” it may not be what they need at all. Much of what passes as “doing things for others” is not actually that at all. What is the best way to navigate this when you care oh-so-much about keeping the peace and having harmonious relationships? Communication for the win! Ask people questions. Tell people your honest feelings, needs, and desires. Check in with others and give them feedback on your inner experience as well. So much confusion, pain and heartbreak could be mitigated if we did not feel afraid of allowing others to know where we are truly at, or if we were not hesitant to find out where they are and what’s true for them. Saturn is finally moving direct again, as of October 23rd, after almost 5 months of retrograde action! If you’ve been feeling stuck, unable to commit and lacking clarity on what does and does not deserve your energy and time, you will feel a huge wave of relief as all the commitments and pressures that have been building up within you are ready for action. Don’t be surprised if your sudden clarity includes not just what you want to commit to, but what you no longer want to spend your time on as well. With Saturn giving a 10th house dristhi (energetic gaze) to the 4 planets in Libra, we can expect to cut things off, including relationships, that do not enhance our status or capacity to show up responsibly in this world, as much as we also might become certain about committing to what does serve this purpose. Unfortunately, as Saturn moves direct, he passes the retrograde baton to Mars, who is beginning his apparent backtracking trip on October 30th. This is a review of our courage, discipline, action, and anger and is unfortunately not traversing the best signs for Mars’ energy. We are in the midst of a 7 month bout of Mars in Taurus, within a one month visit to the very first degrees of sidereal Gemini. This is an alignment that does not necessarily channel our fire into productive and disciplined action, rather increases the chances that we become argumentative and black and white in our thinking. By November 13th, he will be back in Taurus, but there, as we may have found since he first entered on August 10th, we have a tendency to be more lazy than disciplined and pleasure-focused than courageous. This Retrograde period will last until January 12th, 2023, so we have 2 1/2 months to really evaluate the ways in which we fold on ourselves and what we need to feel strong within ourselves so that we can even show up for the others in our lives. Mars is about individuation and show us that if show up first for ourselves (think morning practices, meditation, yoga, exercise) then we are more able to be present in our relationships. We often offer our energy to everyone and everything else first and then give ourselves whatever time remains. If none remains, we may blame everyone else. This is teaching us that we are actually responsible for our own actions and energy. What??!! Finally, this New Moon is the celebration of Diwali throughout India and all over the world. Diwali is the Festival of Lights and comes at this particular moment as the Sun, our source of power, authority, light and our direct connection to source is in debilitation in Libra. The Sun is debilitated in Libra because here we give our power away to others. We allow the ebb and flow of other’s reactions and demands to us to determine how we hold our power, as opposed to honoring the light within and being strong in our own selves. Diwali is reminding us that the light is always within, no matter how dark it gets outside. It is a 5 day celebration, beginning on the 13th lunar phase of the waning moon and reaching apex on Lakshmi puja on the 15th tithi, the New Moon itself. What kind of blessings might we ask for from Lakshmi? Are we not yet tired of wanting things outside of ourselves that then bring us little satisfaction because we have not done the inner work to graciously receive these blessings anyway? This is particularly true in the realm of love and relationships as we often desire to experience love and connection so much, we forget that they also require us to face some of our biggest triggers and fears and wounds. May we be blessed with the grace, vulnerability, generosity, and self-awareness that can guide us in our relations with others and help us find the highest level of happiness, which does not require any other being to do anything else in order for us to experience it! “The Earth holds fire, even as it devours her own body. Air feeds the flames, sending it from here to there, and then everywhere.”
Mars moves into sidereal Gemini on October 15th, just for one month, and then he’ll be retrograding back into Taurus. For starters, this will be experienced as a cooling down, as Mars in the earthy sign of Taurus has brought high levels of heat to us physically. The move into Gemini’s airy mind-field means that the fire is now in the intellect. Expect more heat in communication and the fact that Mercury, the ruler of Gemini is in his other sign and exalted will bring an exacting quality to this. You may be right, but is it worth it? Some words cannot be taken back. Gemini is where occurs the birth of the Ego, the “I” identity that individuates us and gives us a sense of “Self” within the collective. As such, Mars can do well here to increase our knowledge or skill and strengthen our intellect. If there’s some written work you’ve been putting off, this could be the time to get it done. Mars in Taurus may have brought up some issues with discipline and laziness and we have to remind ourselves it is not others who keep us from what we need to do. We choose to do something we prefer and sometimes that involves other people, but that does not make it their fault. Essentially, Mars is a physical and active planet, and so needs a way to channel that energy. The less we are physically disciplined, the more excess fire we have to burn in other ways, that often look like anger. One interesting thing to note about personal discipline is that it is behavior that is controlled and repeated, meaning that occasional physical bursts of energy are not the same thing. To truly strengthen ourselves, we must repeatedly show up in the same way day after day in a measured manner to produce a long-term result. This is why he is exalted in the dutiful sign of Capricorn and debilitated in the ever-changeable and emotional sign of Cancer. Since he will be returning to Taurus November 13th to remain until March 12th, 2023 it will do us good to use this time to examine the ways in which we may have folded on promises we made to ourselves and create some solid routines that we can commit to every day. This can be related to your body, your work, your relationships or your mind/spirit. If you need help discovering what areas of life Mars rules for you, sign up for my email list in the upper right corner (or from the pop-up) and receive the FREE report “Mars in Taurus for all 12 Signs”! It will continue sending for a few more days, and I will then take it down until he moves back there in mid November. You will also receive 3 other super helpful transit reports to navigate these penetrating times. The Sun is going into Libra on October 17th, and this is another fiery Graha (planet/luminary) moving from Earth to Air. In this case, Libra is the sign of debilitation, or worst operating intelligence for the Sun. Our sense of power, authority and leadership is strangled in the wishy-washy wind nature of Libra where taking a stand can seem nearly impossible. Instead of receiving a direct download from Source on what to do and where to go, we look to the worst possible place, other confused people who give us a riddled mess of their own poor advice mixed with their personal desires of what we should do. Sun in Libra panders to others and people-pleases with the very energy that is supposed to be leading us, and we can expect governments, bosses, parents and others in charge to be coming from this disabled state of power. The up-side to this transit is usually that at least things can feel more harmonious on the surface, but in this case we are entering the eclipse portal and have Ketu, the South Node hovering in wait for our luminary to pass through his black hole. This shadow Graha will have us driving deep into the source of power and extracting the one thing most wrong with it and fixating on it. Whatever area of life/house the Sun rules for you will likely be hit pretty hard with Ketu’s disappointing inward glare. Also, whatever house Libra is in your Vedic chart will give a good indication of how you are experiencing this eclipsing of your power. If you haven’t yet gotten your transit report, “Nodes in Aries/Libra for all 12 Signs” then sign up now and check it out. If you are already on my list and received this awhile back, search through your mail and give it a re-read! Venus is also joining the Sun and Ketu on October 18th moving into her own sign. This combination is likely to exacerbate any existing issues in relationships and can make us feel unseen, unappreciated and critical of ourselves and others behavior. It can also be the catalyst for us to see what really underpins our personality in relationships and if we are willing to, how we can shift unhealthy patterns we may have fallen into. I will do a full report on the eclipse and Venus soon, so stay tuned! Namaste <3 Sharad Purnima: Blessings in the Dark
October 9th, 2022 at 10:55 am Hawaii Time (1:55 pm PDT), the Moon will be Full in the star of Revati, joined a still-Retrograde Jupiter. Revati is the final star and is ruled by Pushan, the shepherd who helps walk us home to the peace in our hearts. Revati is “the wealthy” and can offer us powerful spiritual boons as well as material ones. The goddess Revati, from whom the nakshatra gets its name is known as the “Shining one” and was the beautiful daughter of King Kakudmi, who ruled a kingdom beneath the ocean. King Kakudmi had mystical powers that allowed him to visit Brahma-lokha, and speak with the Creator. Once he brought Revati to Brahma to help find a suitable husband for her. He had a list of prospects in hand. Brahma was busy and so they waited. Then, Kakudmi heard him laughing that time in this lokha was different than in other lokhas (realms) and in fact while they were waiting 108 yugas had passed on Earth. None of the men on his list would be alive. Neither would his counselors or friends or his own wife or other children. People would be shorter, dumber and darker in this new Kali Yuga. Vishnu was incarnating as Krishna to help save people from a particularly dark force, the evil Kansa, and his brother Balarama became the chosen one for Revati’s hand in marriage. Balarama is often associated with Adi Sesha, the many-headed serpent whom holds Vishnu up while he dreams up the universe, so in this case, both Revati and Balaram originated in the underworld, the subconscious that holds up the conscious mind and both find themselves on Earth helping to bring humans back to remember love and peace. This is the star where Venus is exalted and as such shows that the biggest happiness is when we do not have a material reason for our joy, and that highest love is that which brings us back to ourselves, offering us refuge and peace. Venus herself is right across the way in debilitation, showing how keeping our nose in the details and all that is “not enough” in our relations with others and ourselves is actually separating us from love itself. Through clear communication and deep inner wisdom and knowing, we can offer a lift to this challenged Venus and find some happiness with what is, or at least make peace with it. Having Jupiter joined our Full Moon in his own sign, even Retrograde, is a huge blessing for us in finding higher wisdom and connecting our mind and emotions to that wisdom. Our inner standing can expand and become reflected back to in our psyche. Jupiter is across from a now-direct Mercury and a debilitated and Combust Venus in Virgo and as such is forming a Saraswati yoga; an alignment that encourages creativity, communication and the flowing genius behind great art. The technical skill, attention to detail and perfectionism that can cause unhappy couple ships, can be a boon in the realm of artistry and music. The uncanny knowing of this Jupiter can further bless with the boon of dharma, truth, and allow the creative work we do to penetrate deeper than the beautiful surface. Saturn is giving a one way dristhi on just this Moon and Jupiter, and can help keep us practical and realistic in our outlook. He can also throw some shade on our excitement and light by highlighting what limits us and reminding us how far the distance is between what we believe and what we actually experience here on Earth. This auspicious full moon is called Sharad Purnima and is said to bring Lakshmi to earth, flying with her owl through the night over houses, and asking, “Are you awake?”. Devotees that stay awake and keep a light in their window will be granted blessings of her grace, abundance, fertility, and love. This is also said to be the night that Krishna, Radha and the gopis danced the Rasa Lila under the full moon, creating such a stir of delight that Shiva came down off his mountain abode to try to get a taste the ecstasy himself. As Venus is in debility, and Libra, Venus’ sign of relationships has the disgruntled south node, Ketu in it at the moment, perhaps the best blessing we can ask for at this time is to be more harmonious within ourselves. To honor our own feelings, desires and needs and to have the courage to communicate them and allow others to do the same. If we are unable to come to compromise or good feeling between the two, then we can own that also without blame or anger. To notice an incongruity in our relations with others does not have to be negative. It is only so because we have a false belief that things should be a certain way. We tend to believe for example, that a relationship working out is “good” and falling apart is “bad”. Of course, most of us have experienced break ups and the end result is often a positive shift in our life, and many people have stayed in relationships well past their due date and experienced how painful that can be. What would happen if we let go of our notions of what is “good” or even what we think we want, and allowed ourselves to let go of our false illusions of control? What if, even for just a moment, we could swim in a sea of consciousness until we can see how it all streams together to create reality; no part wrong or right, just different depending on how the light is reflecting from where we are in that moment. What if we noticed that when we attempt to stay in one place and attach to that one perspective, we end up doing twice as much work treading water, working against nature herself, then if we just allowed ourselves to flow organically with the environment we are in?
