On May 25th our penumbral eclipse begins at 10:47 pm Hawaii time (GMT-10) into the early morning of May 26th, finally completely ending at 3:49 am. The Total Eclipse will be from 1:11 am HT on the 26th until 1:25 am and worth staying up if you are here in Hawaii, as it will be the largest Supermoon of 2021 and the only total lunar eclipse! Pink in color and referred to as the Flower Moon for the time of year it is appearing (Spring moves towards Summer). In the Vedic system it is in the star of Anuradha, who is also represented by a flower, a lotus blooming towards the light. This can represent our enlightenment of devotion that often comes after walking a long and sometimes lonely path (the yogic path). Radha is the ultimate symbol of devotion, the lover who offers herself so totally to her beloved (Krishna) that she becomes his other half. Her love is both romantic and friendly and ultimately unconditional and complete. That is why she is the path for so many devotees, because she points us towards God. Anuradha is ruled by Mitra, the god of Friendship, who also shows us the unconditional love of friendship.
This star falls completely in sidereal Scorpio, and shows where we can elevate our emotional turmoil by turning our love to something higher than ourselves. The Moon is in debilitation in the earlier degrees of this sign in the preceding star of Vishaka, and we can see that walking alone in the sometimes dense forest can cause our fear and suffering to be heightened. The Moon wants something to roll against, and in Anuradha, we are able to lean on Love. True love is God itself. In Hawaii there is a saying, “Aloha ke akua”. This means “Love is God” and this is the essence of both Radha and Mitra. With the South node penetrating deep into not only the waters of Scorpio, but the vulnerable heart of our psyche, we can expect to learn some deep lessons here if we listen. Maybe even really begin to draw to karmic conclusion the lessons of this house for us. The north node, Rahu, in Taurus has had us focusing our energy on what we can grow and enjoy but until we plumb the depths of our shadows, we will continue to sprout more weeds than fruits. Both the Sun and Venus here, are offering us more enjoyment, pleasure and compromise which can feel soo good, but deep down we also know there is more work to be done;-) With Mercury, Saturn and Jupiter all beginning Retrograde motion in the next few weeks, we can expect to have to revisit what we’ve been rolling over. All the many pins we have stuck in things to avoid dealing with unpleasantness or hard work, are going to become loose and we will find we have made too many exceptions and need a redo. This will be collective and personal. There is anger beneath the surface that will heighten as Mars moves into debility in the sign of Cancer, where we are not able to find appropriate outlets for our fire and instead resort to emotional outbursts and passive aggression. Our societal beliefs, commitments to hard work and suffering, and our friendly communication that may not have always been honest are all going to take a backward drive through memory lane and we can expect to rethink much of the progress we thought we had made… For an in-depth exploration of this eclipse, watch the video! On Tuesday, May 11th at 9 am Hawaii Time (-10 GMT) we have the Moon and Sun coming together in the star of Krittika at the very end of sidereal Aries. Krittika is “the Cutter” and is where we divide and use the utmost skill in our insight and awareness of how to take something apart. The deity of this star is Agni, the god of fire who helps us digest and transform whatever is in front of us. Fire rules the eyes and our sight, so this star can also help us “see” clearly before we decide what to cast away or cut off. The story of this star brings us the birth of Kartikeyya, the warrior child associated with Mars who fights the demon Tarakasura when he is 7 days old. He is nursed by the wives of the sages, the Krittika, who have been cast off to the sky by their husbands for believing them to be unfaithful, hence this star is not one for marriage! (I tell the full story in the video) The Moon is exalted in the Taurus portion of this star as here we have both the grounded energy of Earth and the capacity to use this fiery insight to cut off any excess fat from our emotional state and connections. In Taurus, we take care of ourselves. We create peaceful and harmonious environments where our nervous systems can thrive and we take care of and nurture our bodies with food and self-care.
This New Moon moves us into the auspicious day (and days before) called Akshaya Tritiya. “Akshaya” means everlasting, eternal and complete. Tritiya refers to the third phase, or tithi of the Moon where we are strong and victorious. On this day, both the Sun and the Moon are exalted and that is why we find long-lasting results from our investments. We are blessed by having our luminaries in exaltation. Wherever the Sun might be on a New Moon in Aries, three phases of the Moon later ensures that the Moon will be in Taurus. The other planets that are close to the Sun, Mercury and Venus, also often fall in either their own signs, each other’s friendly signs, or in Venus’ case exaltation on Akshaya Tritiya. This year, Saturn will be in his own sign as well. This is a day that many people invest in gold or other things that can bring long-term wealth. It is also said to be a great day to start gardens or farming, and this year with so many planets in Taurus, this will certainly bear fruit. Some people may plan their weddings for this day or engagements and other activities that can bring longevity, but of course, avoiding the Krittika nakshatra! Many auspicious things are said to have happened on this day including the appearance of the Goddess Annapurna (Parvati’s form as the giver of food and grains), the birth of Vishnu’s 6th avatar Parashurama the warrior, and the day the Ganges is said to have come down to Earth from the heavens. It is also said that Ganesha and Ved Vyasa began the writing of the Mahabharata, the great epic of India that contains within the Bhagavad Gita. Lord Krishna granted his childhood friend Sudama great riches on this day as well, and then he and his wife came to the conclusion that they preferred to live in simplicity in the woods and meditate instead. This is an important thing to think upon as we approach this auspicious timing, as perhaps the greatest riches are not actual gold, but spiritual gold. When we invest in our own awakening to Spirit, to the Big Love, then we are not going to ever be bereft of anything because we are forever full! Have a Blessed New Moon and Akshaya Tritiya!
