New Moon begins the month of Taurus, Mercury goes Retrograde!
Vedic Astrology Forecast for Sunday, May 17th, 2015: The New Moon happens this evening (Sunday) at 6:12 pm Hawaii time. The New Moon happens each month when the Sun and Moon join in the exact degrees of a sign and thus marks the beginning of a new month. This Moon is in the practical, sensual earth sign of Taurus ruled by Venus, and awakens a month of pleasure-seeking and connection. The Moon is exalted in the beginning of Taurus, where the New Moon will take place, in the nakshatra of Krittika, which is ruled by the Sun and means "the Cutter". The Moon is exalted in Taurus because the stabilizing, yet connective sign of the Bull makes the Moon, our ever-changing emotions, feelings and thoughts, feel safe and grounded. It is exalted in Krittika because this nakshatra cuts through the illusion of these thoughts and feelings and puts us in touch with our true nature. Being ruled by the Sun it has the sattwic intention of purifying through its burning rays. The Moon is not only joining the sun in Taurus, but Mars and Mercury as well and while this month promises to be much gentler and more grounded than the preceding months, we still have to be on the lookout for our communication being black and white and cut and dry. Mars at its best, is disciplined and focused, he doesn't really know how to settle down and graze his way to his destination, so watch out for feeling angry at yourself for not being disciplined enough and taking it out on others. Especially in the form of communication, as we've been experiencing, while Mercury and Mars have travelled together through the zodiac most of 2015. To make communication even more confusing, Mercury is turning Retrograde tomorrow (Monday) at 3:44 pm Hawaii time and will cause the next few weeks of anything related to communication and information gathering and processing "backed up" and delayed. These periods of Mercury Retrograde help us take time to internalize and process the ways in which we give and receive information and knowledge and especially in the Venus-ruled artistic sign of Taurus, this can be a period of great insight and creativity. This will also help us hold our tongue if Mars' aggression rears its angry head! Try to stay unattached to the results of your actions while this alignment is in place and remember the point of the journey is not to arrive. Enjoy the relative peace of this Taurus New Month and relax in the arms of self-nourishment, instead of wrestling against it. ![]() The Sun changes signs from his exalted position in fiery Aries, to the feminine, earthy sign of Taurus this evening Thursday, May 14th, at 6:35pm Hawaii Time. Of course, it is actually we who are moving, not the Sun, but we have a tendency to be Earth-centric in our view of things:) The Sun is the Graha (literally, "to grab" but in Vedic Astrology refers to the Sun, Moon, 5 planets, and the 2 nodes of the Moon) of our Power, Inspiration, Confidence, Responsibility, and our general ability to lead our own little one man or woman army of our Self. He is our Soul's essence; pure Consciousness. When he was in Aries, he was strong, aligned with right action and disciplined. He could move without haltering, be direct and not waste energy. In the sensual realm of Venus-ruled Taurus, he is likely to get caught laying around in a field chewing some cud and forget about what he really wanted to do anyway, let alone have the discipline to do it. Like the ram, Taurus' bull is a quadruped and they are strong and stable creatures who are forward-moving and not very adaptable. This could work in our benefit here, as Taurus is also a fixed sign and likes to stay the course once its on it, so if while the Sun was in Aries we were able to get ourselves moving on any area of our life (likely related to the house in your chart it was transiting) he might just continue forward while in the practical yet artistic sign of Taurus for the next month. And perhaps the results of our efforts will be more beautiful and delicious because of it:) The Sun is joining Mars and Mercury in Taurus, two planets that have been hanging out in close proximity for a couple months now and plan to continue that pattern for a couple more. Mars brings an aggressive and harsh energy to Mercury's communication and intellect. While Taurus basically makes all of the above planets more mellow and gentler, this Mars/Mercury conjunction has been the scenario for some time now and in much more aggressive alignments; We have all likely done at least a bit of damage with our communications recently. Meaning that even though we might have felt right and righteous in a moment of conflict, we chose to cut the communication connection rather than foster and nurture it. Just before the Sun moves into Taurus, Mars moves into exact opposition to the planet Saturn, who is sitting retrograde in Mars' sign of Scorpio. This means that Mars and Saturn, naturally inimical Grahas are facing off, giving each other their dristhi, an energetic glance (or glare). Saturn brings to Mars a fearful and constricting energy which could actually be a benefit to Mars' influence on Mercury right now, since Saturn slows Mars down and will help us think before we speak or act. He will also curb some of the confidence of Mars, so perhaps we won't be so sure we are right. Saturn is a humbling planet, the keeper of our time and the one who reminds us that it is going to run out. He brings us to face the consequences of our hasty actions and speech. Saturn will also be giving his dristhi to the Sun and Mercury here, but it is more directly focused at Mars, since the degrees of opposition are moving towards exact. Likewise, Mars will also bring some benefit through his dristhi to Saturn. Saturn has been struggling with our irrational fears in the sign of Scorpio in whatever area of our life that falls in, and since its been retrograde we have been internalizing that process. Scorpio is where we are trying to strengthen our inner self, our emotions and feelings, and with its ruler Mars giving his glance, he is offering Saturn some strength and support here. Mars has the exact confidence and unfaltering ability to walk through the fire that Saturn needs to face our fears and humility. Since Mars moved into Taurus on May 3rd we have been feeling this energy-exchange between Saturn and Mars, but this evening until Saturday morning, the two planets will be in exact degrees opposite one another and the intensity of the 2-way dristhi will be elevated. The Moon is in the sign of Pisces, in the nakshatra of Revati most of Thursday and into Friday morning, Hawaii time, where it is joined Ketu, the south node of the Moon. Revati is where the soul finds its way home. It is ruled by the shepherd, Pushan and it is a soft nakshatra that guides beings to their resting place. In the mystical, otherworldly sign of Pisces joined the often contentious, but also tuned-in and wise Ketu, this is an alignment for going within and finding some peace. After months of struggling and arguing and impatience we are perhaps all due for a little quiet time. A time out. This is a good time to listen rather than speak and reflect on what comes up for you in interactions with others without reacting. We have all said enough, and we would be wise to take advantage of the Moon's time in Pisces to step out of the fire and observe. No matter what social activities you find yourself participating in, you can make the choice to maintain integrity of speech and choose less over more. The moon will be moving into Aries late Friday morning (afternoon for those on Pacific time) and will once again activate our go-get'em attitude, so if we can be more in tune with our self and our truest intentions by then, and use the humility, willingness to do the hard work, and slower pace that Saturn offers us by his dristhi on Mars, the Sun and Mercury moving forward into this month, we will be more successful in our communication now, and in our endeavors in the long run. For more information or to schedule a reading about how these energies affect your specific chart: ![]() The focus will be on our relationships with ourselves and others this week and going forward, and how we communicate will continue to be a theme. Early this morning (here in Hawaii) the planet Venus, which represents our relationships, happiness and pleasure-seeking moved from its own sign of Taurus to its neighboring constellation/sign of Gemini, ruled by Mercury. Mercury is theplanet of communication; like Venus it is an outgoing planet who's intention is to relate, albeit with words and ideas rather than through sensory connection and compromise. Mercury moved into Taurus, joining Venus early this last week and brought our communication to a sweeter, gentler and more connective level than it has been while it was in Aries, joined its divisive and disciplined ruler Mars and the exalted Sun, our source of power. Venus and Mercury are now exchanging signs, next door to one another, providing us much-needed help in our ability to connect through communication, and possibly helping to mend some of the damage we may have done through our communication when our speech and reasoning was perhaps more harsh, direct and militaristic. Hopefully, we have done a lot of work in a small amount of time to heal our wounds and re-connect with those we might've fallen out with because we will continued to be tested in this area of our lives in the next month. Mars continues to be combust (too close to the Sun) and our sense of personal power is being tested and burned through this process, which will continue for several months. Mars will be moving out of Aries into Taurus to join Mercury again tomorrow morning and while it will be a milder Mars out of its power in Venus' sign, it will be bringing unsettled and potentially aggressive energy back to Mercury and the realm of communication. Tomorrow evening at 5:42 pm in Hawaii, the Moon will be directly opposite the Sun causing it to shine in its full luminescence Sunday night. The Full Moon will be in the sign of Libra, Venus' other sign and the Sun is again exalted in the sign of Aries. The polarity here is between our personal power and the discipline and strength that is required to achieve our individual goals and the part of us that wants to connect to others, especially in partnership. This is one of the most prominent struggles we push and pull with as humans, and the fine line we tread between these two directions dictates a big part of our lives. The Moon struggles in Libra as she wants to give unconditionally, yet Libra being of Venus wants to make sure everyone is getting a fair deal and that no one is giving too much or too little in the exchange. To put further stress on the Moon (our mind and our emotions) it is being hemmed between two malefics, Rahu the north node of the Moon who obsessively goes after whatever it can to feed its insatiable desire to try new things, and Saturn, the planet that reminds us there's a limited amount of time to do what needs to be done and brings up our fears and insecurities, surrounding this. This can put a lot of stress on our mind, but fortunately (or not) we've been dealing with Libra being hemmed since November and have probably become quite good at handling this unsettled and fearful alignment! Especially if you have any natal planets in Libra;-) The moon will be full in the nakshatra of Swati, ruled by Vayu, the God of Wind who gives both the power of breath and prana which sustain life, and the restlessness of the wind. Swati is the sword that seeks independence, and cuts through what it perceives to be in its way, however indiscriminately. It is ruled by Rahu, which can be scattered in its efforts to try everything. Pranayama, breath control exercises can be of great help here. Concentrating on your breath and allowing it to become on a rhythm or a count for a focused period of time is a simple, meditative practice anyone can do. The key here is to check in with ourselves, and what our independence, personal identity and power is truly about. We do not and cannot live alone on this Earth and will have to find ways to compromise, connect and communicate with one another and the planet in a way that allows others to also have their freedom to exist and thrive.
