The Moon is full today, April 26th at 5:31 pm HT (-10 GMT) in the star of Swati in sidereal Libra. This is a star where we are finding our individuation, despite the illusions (Swati is ruled by Rahu) and the wind (Vayu, the Wind is the lord) blowing us in every direction. Here the object we wield is a sword, and we are fighting for what feels like our own power. The Sun is in debility in this place in the sky because it is where we give our power away in an effort to get along and be liked. This star reminds us that no one can have power over us if we do not give it to them. How do you fight the wind? How do you fight illusions of other people? The sword we carry will not get us far if we swing it at every ghost we see. The sword must be used in discernment and with training.
The training happens in Aries, where the Sun, Mercury and Venus are residing. Here is where we learn how to strengthen ourselves and how to show up in a disciplined and active way to follow our own light. The Sun is in his highest state of power here. Mercury and Venus, however are not. With these two relational planets in Aries, we are not very compromising at the moment and this Moon is reminding us that there is a time and place to be willing to budge. If we are so strong in our logic-oriented mind of right and wrong (as shown by Mercury in Aries and Mars in Gemini) we might forget to make room for other people’s reality. Being in our power does not mean fighting or blocking any ideas or people that make us feel disempowered. It means recognizing that we are the keeper of our own power and it is ultimately us who gave it away to begin with. This full moon also marks Hanuman Jayanti, the birth of the monkey-deity who shows us the way of bhakti. If we hope to emulate Hanuman in his strength and courage, we must also emulate him in his devotion to truth and love. It is only through the love in his heart that he is able to muster up his incredible feats of power. If he is selfish in his endeavors, he will be brought back down to earth as he was when he was a small child chasing a mango in the sky. It is only through his true awareness that there are no "others" that he is able to act in full bhakti, full devotion. ![]() For the rest of April we have what is called a Parivartan yoga where Mars is in Mercury’s sign of Gemini and Mercury is in Mars’ sign of Aries. With either of these two planets in the other’s sign, we can see fighting words come up. Mercury is quick to speak, focused on black/white and right/wrong thinking. It also illicits fiery word choices in the sign of Aries. Mars in Gemini fights about ideas and information, and can play devil’s advocate here. Especially in today’s internet world, where being a keyboard warrior is so easy and sometimes anonymous, we can see these two planets in either of the other’s signs create and end friendships in one keystroke. The blessing here is that the parivartan yoga gives both planets extra intelligence through the exchange of signs. A capacity for discipline with speech from Mars and a discernment about which battles are worth fighting from Mercury. It’s also super important to understand that people fight (with words) differently. Some people argue because they enjoy arguing. To these people, ideas are only formed once they’ve been proven through debate and it is fun for them to argue from all different sides. They may or may not even ever commit to a point of view. This can be some of what we see especially hot right now, and is often seen with Mars in Gemini or Libra or Mercury in Aries or Leo, or just significant planets in Gemini and fire signs. Some people are fighting relationally. This means that for them the argument is about the relationship itself. They want others to prove their love or friendship by “taking their side” or caring about their feelings. These arguments usually happen around trivial or mundane things that the person does not actually care about that much. These can be the most difficult people to fight with because there is no big truth or even information at the core of their argument. They don’t have attachment to a right or wrong, they are just interested in how you relate to them. The people they are arguing with may have a different style and therefore be fighting for something they care about a lot. Since fighting is primarily in the realm of Mars, which is logic oriented and disconnecting rather than connective and relational, and conversation in the realm of Mercury where we are attempting to be objective with information, we see these people often suffer from fights, as they are using it to try to relate and no amount of logic or information will change how they feel. These folks may have Mars or Mercury in water signs (especially Cancer and Scorpio) or significant Libra/Mars energy in their chart. Finally, we have those who are fighting for their beliefs. These are the people most likely to get riled up and fierce in battle, as they are fighting for what feels like their core principles. These people have strong connections to truth and what they believe is an extension of who they are. The passion and sense of justice in the fight can make the person on the other end wish they never got into it, unless of course it is an argument between two such people! In that case, you might as well get some popcorn. Interestingly, these folks can be the earliest to fold on an argument, once they see that they are unable to convince the other of their perspective, they usually run out of steam because that was the point for them. We can often see Mars or Mercury in Sagittarius or Aquarius here or a strong relationship to the 9th house. Whatever your style of arguing/fighting is, note that while it’s not “wrong” to argue, it is often ineffective, regardless of your motivation. It rarely brings more connection, wisdom/knowledge or convinces anyone of anything. The best use of Mars energy is to channel it into a disciplined regular action that you take yourself. The best use of Mercury’s energy is to have discernment in the information you take in and send back out into the world, Now is a great time to use mantra practice as the repetition meets Mars and the words meet Mercury. Pranyama, breath practices can also be quite helpful for disciplining the body and releasing the mind of harmful thought patterns. This is also a great time to get active on any paperwork, research or writing you have been putting off while Mercury was in the watery sign of Pisces. Best to stay clear of easy triggers like social media and conversations with people with whom you often argue. Even being funny can be quite cutting at times and remember these transits are being experienced by everyone, so you will not be the only one with a sharp tongue;-) The Sun and Moon come together in 28:15 degrees sidereal Pisces in the final star of the zodiac, Revati this Sunday, April 11th at 4:29 pm HT (-10 GMT). Revati is where we are walking each other home. It is ruled by the god Pushan, a shepherd who guides the flocks to their resting place. As too are we coming to an end of several weeks with two to four planets in sidereal Pisces, allowing us to feel, emote, receive and dive deep into our connection with Source. This is also the beginning. This is the Hindu month of Chaitra, wherein we celebrate the first month of the Luni-solar calendar. It is said to be when Brahma created the universe. It is also the start of the 9 night festival honoring the Goddess. Durga Navaratri celebrates the epic tale of the mother that comes to save her children from the evil demon Mahishasura. She slays the shape-shifting buffalo headed demon after many trials from his minions and after she has had to manifest in all her various forms to take on his army. In the final scene, she tells her devotees that she will always be there when they call for her. This is a key teaching of the goddess, as we must call her if we want her to arrive. She is hidden but ever present and the calling out to her and manifesting her grace comes from the humility to ask for help to begin with. No easy feat in our modern world where humility is low and ego is high. She also sucks the demon back into her being after she slays him, indicating that even he is part of her. Even our darkest, ugliest and more fearful aspects of ourself are welcomed into her folds to be recycled (up cycled?) into new manifestations of her. This final day “victory day” is also a celebration of Vishnu’s avatar Ram and his birth and the start of Ram Navami.
As this New Moon is immediately followed by the Moon, then Sun and eventually Mercury joining Venus (who already hopped the Gandanta into Aries on April 10th), we will feel an enormous uptick of energy and fire on its heels. It is so important to make sure we have properly aligned with ourselves in the days of darkness leading up so that whatever we jump start on the other end is coming of and from us and not the world or impressions upon us. Expect a bit of a shock to the system, especially if you favor the more watery and earth elementals and have a harder time with the masculine energies of air and fire we are moving into. Mars is moving into Gemini from Taurus on April 13th and our tongues could become quite sharp. While ruler, Mercury is still debilitated in Pisces until the 16th, it might be confusing and emotional battles we take up with our intellect. Then the two Grahas will be in each other’s sign, Mercury in Aries and Mars in Gemini offering both a higher dose of intelligence but our words could become even sharper and more focused. The black and white thinking of Mars is antithetical to the more nuanced and objective approach of a healthy Mercury and we can expect some battles to rage. Especially in the online world. Jupiter now in Aquarius is bringing social justice into the forefront and since we each have a different view of what that means and a lot of fighting energy “up” for us, while the ruler of that passion is in an intellectual sign. The best remedy for this is to avoid social media and the news. Try to find other ways to exercise your mind, like reading a good long tome or chanting mantras! The more you allow yourself to engage in the online universe, the more it will trigger you, so consider yourself warned. Remember yourself and your true nature that you were connecting with during the new moon and go back to that inner fire. “It is better to strive in one’s own dharma than to succeed in the dharma of another. Nothing is ever lost in following one’s own dharma, but competition in another’s dharma breeds fear and insecurity.” CH3 sl 35 Bhagavad Gita (translation by E.
