The New Moon in sidereal Aquarius is happening on March 2nd at 7:34 am HT (9:34 am PST). The Moon and Sun are coming together in the nakshatra Shatabishak. Shatabishak is the star of a “Hundred Healers” and is ruled by Varuna, who is known as the god of the ocean waters, but truly, he is the “dark sun”, or the Sun as it disappears beneath the ocean and we experience night. The eyes of Varuna are the stars, and they can see in the night all the corruption that takes place in the dark. As the sign of Aquarius is an air sign and related to society as a whole and the systems with which we function in society, we can see that the hundred healers are here to heal socially, not just bodies. Ruled by Rahu, the dispersive, suspicious and foreign “other-worldly” quality is present in this star, and Aquarius’ rulership by Saturn shows the punishing element that arises when we see injustice, especially when it is at the hands of an individual or group who seems to have an inordinate amount of power. Aquarius is the sign of progress, technology and aeronautics and is opposite where we had our full moon two weeks ago in Leo. This shows the inherent opposition between the “King” and the “people”. Aquarius is the sign of the people, and if the King gets too cocky, Shatabishak is the specific star that sees that and aims to bring the power balance back. Jupiter is closely joined our Sun and Moon here, although recently moved into his own star of Purva Bhadrapada. He has been bringing our beliefs and ideals to the realm of social justice since he entered Aquarius (first in April of 2021, then again in November 2021). Here we are not perhaps at our wisest or most expansive, but we are inspired by what we see wrong and unjust, and by imagining what new systems could potentially take flight. Purvabhadrapada is where we have a lightning bolt of insight that we are beyond these bodies, and even these minds. We are infinite beings merely existing within the finite realm of matter. This star takes us from Aquarius into Jupiter’s own sign of Pisces, where we can explore deeper into this realization and find the truth of our identity by losing it.
Since Saturn rules Aquarius and also Capricorn, where Mercury and Saturn are tightly conjunct, and likewise Mars and Venus who just crossed in, we can see that all the planets except the nodes of the Moon are in Saturn’s signs. Saturn is the planet of Time. The concept of time is what instills fear in our hearts, because we begin to imagine the “future” and remember the “past” and we forget that everything happens in the present moment. It is the bearer of pressure, as our awareness of time is what tells us that it is running out and we must do_____before it is too late. Too late for a missed opportunity, an appointment, or too late for your body’s tenure here on earth. Too late=death in its most primal reality. Saturn is also the moksha karaka planet that gives us the potential to move beyond this life/death paradigm and time as a linear concept. In the depths of the loss, disappointment, humility, pain and suffering that Saturn offers us our big lessons with, we are able to learn how to surrender. Ultimately, it teaches us that while loss is inevitable, even of our own body, the pain we feel around it is negotiable. If we accept the truth of death, then we can begin to embrace the truth of life and fully live it. Saturn is the great meditator, with whom’s boon we can fly beyond time. February 28th begins the celebration called Maha Shivaratri “the Great Night of Shiva” here in Hawaii and in the US, as the 14th lunar day, or tithi of the Moon begins on this day. Every month, as the moon wanes to dark, the phase right before the New Moon is a Shivaratri, or night of Shiva. Shiva means corpse, and is pure consciousness itself. When our Mind (the Moon) joins Consciousness (the Sun), we are closer to a state of Shiva awareness. This alignment of the luminaries gives us the highest potential for this state. This particular 14th tithi before the New Moon, in the Hindu month of Phalguni, is said to be the time, where the tilt of the Earth is such that by sitting with an erect spine we have the most conducive conditions for connecting with this Shiva Consciousness through meditation. Full Moon in Magha: From Where Does Your Power Arise?
The Full Moon is on Wednesday, February 16th at 6:56 am HT (8:56 am PST) in the star of Magha in the constellation of Leo. The brightest star in this nakshatra is Regulus, which is 100 times as bright as the Sun! Magha is “the Mighty one” and is located near the third eye of the lion’s head, indicating its connection to Source. When we hear a lion roar, it is fueled by the roar of all the lion’s before it. A male lion learns to take its place as King by its direct lineage, and also it is in its very fiber of being to be King, as a lion. It knows no other way. Magha is ruled by the Pitris, the ancestors and protectors of mankind. Here is the part of the sign of Kings that shows how first one must have lineage, and call upon the wisdom of his predecessors to pass through them. Only then can he move forward into his own power and grow upon that wisdom. The royal seat or palanquin is the symbol, and is a place we must be worthy of to grace. It reminds me of the Ramayana, where Bharata knows he is not the rightful heir to the throne of Dasaratha, their father, and has Rama place his feet in a pair of shoes to sit upon the palanquin indicating that he is still King, despite being banished to the forest. To truly lead others, there must be a right of passage, a difficulty to overcome and a clear path that led to your role. It must not come from a desire to be powerful, rather a need to serve that is inborn in those who have it. People born with this star in their chart often have much ancestral pride and can be excellent leaders, traditionalists and fond of ceremonies. Now is a wonderful time to tune into what your family tree has to share; perhaps through conversations, or even digging through old articles, pictures and journals. It can be surprising to find an old relative to whom we feel such similarity and connection and can spark an interest or path you hadn’t given serious consideration to before! It may also be a time when you can overpower others with your sudden intensity, so be careful where you direct that roar! The Moon is always across from the Sun in a Full Moon, but this month, it is in the Sun’s own sign. As such, It is reflecting back higher Consciousness, Leadership, and Power and perhaps we can even feel “empowered” within ourselves. Leo is the sign of the government, and anyone in power (think Large Corporations) and this moon can illuminate the growing power gap in our current world and reflect to us some inner strength to harness in the face of so much imbalance. Leo is also where we are affectionate, warm and playful, the way lions play with each other, so bliss each other up with physical love. The Sun just left Capricorn and moved into Aquarius, Saturn’s other sign, yet it is still in close enough conjunction to Saturn, the ruler, so we may need this reminder. When Saturn is combust, we often feel a bit like Cinderella, and as though we have done quite enough in the realm of work and responsibility and feel put upon that anyone might request us to do more. This can actually demotivate us to show up in our lives and in our responsibilities and create more work in the end. Saturn’s signs are where we feel humble and often see our own light as dim. We tend to think our power comes only from our physical labor in Capricorn and in Aquarius, from our capacity to help make society more fair and we intellectualize ways to disperse power from mighty individuals to dole out to the rest of the people. When the Sun transits further from Saturn in the week ahead, and closer to Jupiter, we will likely have more motivation to use our power to help others and not just feel sorry for ourselves. Mercury moving closer to Saturn can be a roadblock to speaking our truth but it can also be an opening for really allowing the cold, hard truths to sink in! Venus and Mars are almost in exact conjunction in the sky at this point, just in time for Valentine’s Day and are causing some volatility in relationships. This incredibly close degrees of our relational planet with our planet of personal will and discipline, will be ongoing into March, when Venus starts to speed up March 11th-16th and break away. It is more important now than ever to learn how to direct Mars energy towards ourselves. This means disciplining ourselves, so we don’t blame others for our own lack of will. Fortunately, this is available as Mars is in better dignity (operating intelligence) in Sagittarius than Venus is. Venus might even encourage us to bypass both our own and our “others” feelings by creating or subscribing to a philosophy that explains them away. While overall this is problematic for relationships, in this case, it can be helpful to keep the peace. The more you attune to your spiritual practices, ideally both parties, the better the outcome. On Feb 25th the Moon joins Mars and Venus in Sagittarius, and on the 26th, Mars will transit into Capricorn. Then on the 27th and 28th, both Venus and the Moon will join the Capricorn party with 5 planets (and Pluto) there! This will lead us to our New Moon in Aquarius and can be quite a High pressure time. Fortunately, here, both Venus and Mars get a dignity boost. Venus is friendly to Capricorn’s ruler, Saturn, and is practical and has realistic expectations of partners here (although can also feel like people and relationships are utilitarian rather than fun). Mars is exalted in Capricorn and is the most able to channel his intense drive into a functional project that will serve to protect, endure and be useful. The often monotonous and dreary landscape of Capricorn is the perfect place for our passionate planet of ire to serve in a physical, repetitive way that has a purpose. Specials!!
