On Friday, January 24th at 1:42 pm PST, the Moon and Sun will come together in the solid, yet somber sign of Capricorn in the star of Shravana. Shravana is the star of listening deep beneath the surface, mantras and music and the strong spiritual yearning of one who is willing to tune in amongst the fray. Ruled by Vishnu, this star is depicted as an ear and shows practical results can yield to those who feel devotion in their efforts. Capricorn is where we work, practically and hard in the direction of something to gain something. Here we are very aware of Time and how it will wear us down eventually, in body and mind, how it will run out and we will not have anymore, and how it is constantly pressing down on us to accomplish our tasks which accomplish our goals. With the Moon and Sun is the planet Mercury, who has been here for some time already and is helping us discern what to hear, how to assimilate that and what to communicate about that to others. We also have Saturn, just moved in the day before this Moon cycle begins, to his own house and sign.
Saturn is at home in Capricorn, where his fear is a welcome reminder of all that could go wrong and the pressure he places on us is simply the pressure of life moving towards death and being aware of that as Time. Saturn in Capricorn will also offer us all better boundaries, so that we can get what needs to be done. Saturn stays in a sign about 2 and ½ years and often times (like the cycle he's moving from in Sagittarius and the one he's moving in now) that duration is over the course of 3 years, with some Retrograde action moving him back to the previous sign. This is a long time. Fortunately, this long time will be more productive, rather than primarily fearful and will involve tangible results rather than ideologies and emotions. On Friday, January 10th, the Moon will be Full in sidereal Gemini in the star of Punarvasu, “The Return of the Light”. This Nakshatra is located at the end of Gemini and beginning of Cancer in the heads of the twins, Castor and Pollux. This star comes after the storm and upending, to remind us of our light. The Earth Mother, Aditi is born and as her, we are both the created and the creators. The exact degrees of the Moon and Sun across from each other is going to be at 11:21 am PST and the prenumbral eclipse itself (9:07 am to 1:12 pm, max point 11:10 am PST) will be barely visible from Australia, Asia, Europe and Africa. Prenumbral eclipses are where the Moon will just be a touch darker, not fully outcast, so it will not be very easy to observe even in locations where it will be visible. This is an eclipse on the Moon from the North Node, Rahu, and unlike its partner, the Solar Eclipse on Christmas with the South Node in Sagittarius, this one is about new beginnings. We are learning how to be more discerning with our information, in what we choose to take in, how we process it and then in how we communicate it with others. Rahu creates an atmosphere of frenetic intake, with little experience or knowledge, so we must understand that everything we “eat” is not food. This will be a time of great growth for some, and for others a time of delusion and confusion. To mitigate any delusive tendencies you possess, repeating mantras and maintaining a meditative state during the eclipse is ideal, although if you are at work or somewhere where it is not possible, perhaps start your day with a mediation and yoga practice and then if there is a way to avoid excessive interaction with others and driving during this time-window, do.
With the Sun, our source of power, connection to source and consciousness across the way in Sagittarius, we are still leading from our beliefs. We also have 4 other Grahas there (planetary energies that “grab us”). The source of inspiration and idealism that we hold to is being constricted and committed to by Saturn, who is moving out by the end of the month, uplifted and examined by Jupiter in his own sign, and being communicated by a combust Mercury. This combustion causes us to feel unheard and this turns us to wise-cracks, small jokes and jabs at others and their beliefs in order to make it known that we feel this way. Ketu, the South Node is still here, dragging us deep through past karma in this area of our lives and an acute avoidance of dealing with whatever is left here for us to heal. Mars in Scorpio is giving a one-way, 8th house dristhi (energetic gaze) to this Full Moon/Eclipse by Rahu and is creating some discipline and courage around examining the shadow side of ourselves in our communication and information processing, but also some anger around the perceived delusion of others. Be careful what you blow up now personally; information will certainly be blowing up all around you and in the outside world, but the lesson here is to stay disciplined and discerning, and use repetitive practices to eventually come to what is truth. Venus just entered Aquarius, giving our relationships a boost away from the self-centered and fear-based paradigm of “how is love serving me and my goals” to one of “how can I use love and relationships to serve the greater good?” What new models, paradigms and systems can be created to change the face of relating and how can anyone be happy if we are not all enjoying that happiness? The futuristic, humble and universal (as opposed to intimate) sign of Aquarius is where we find our happiness in helping greater causes and forging forward into futuristic terrain.
